Dryer not heating?

When the drum turns but the clothes stay damp and cold, the cause is usually in the heating circuit or the airflow. Clogged vents are behind many of these failures.

Fire risk If the dryer is very hot to the touch or smells like burning, stop it and unplug it. Lint-clogged vents are a leading cause of dryer fires.

What you can check first

  1. Electric dryers use a double breaker. If one half trips, the drum can still turn but there's no heat. Reset the breaker fully.
  2. Gas dryers: make sure the gas valve on the supply line is open.
  3. Clean the lint screen and check the vent hose behind the dryer for crushing or kinks.
  4. Go outside and check the vent flap opens while the dryer runs. Weak airflow means the vent needs cleaning.

The usual causes

Blown thermal fuse

A safety fuse that blows when the dryer overheats, very often because the vent is clogged.

Heating element (electric)

The coil burns through and breaks, so no heat is produced.

High-limit or cycling thermostat

A failed thermostat cuts the heat or cycles it off too early.

Igniter (gas)

The igniter glows weakly or not at all, so the gas never lights.

Gas valve coils (gas)

The igniter glows but the flame starts and goes out, or never catches.
