Oven not heating?
If the burners on top work but the oven stays cold, the problem is almost always inside the oven itself, and it's usually one part.
What you can check first
- Check that the oven isn't in delay bake, timed cook, Sabbath or control lock mode.
- Electric ovens: look at the bake element on the oven floor. A visible break, blister or burned spot means it has failed.
- Gas ovens: watch the igniter through the bottom panel. If it glows orange for over a minute and the flame doesn't light, the igniter is probably weak.
- Check the breaker. Electric ranges use a double breaker, and one half can trip on its own.
The usual causes
Weak hot surface igniter (gas)
The most common gas oven failure. The igniter glows but isn't hot enough to open the gas valve.
Bake or broil element (electric)
Elements burn out over time and stop heating.
Temperature sensor
A failing sensor makes the oven heat slowly or far off the set temperature.
Safety valve (gas)
If the igniter is good but gas never flows, the oven safety valve may have failed.
Control board
Less common: the board stops sending power to the igniter or element.
